College students' rights advocacy prompts Starbucks to revise its Starbucks Card rules: lower card refund fees and customizable top-up amounts
As a prepaid card product launched by Starbucks, the Star Gift Card has long suffered from issues such as limited recharge amounts, excessively high card refund fees, and the inability to clear remaining balances. Four university students discovered during their consumption that when the remaining balance on a Star Gift Card was only 19 yuan, they could neither purchase any Starbucks product nor get a refund to clear the balance. After investigation, they found that the prepaid cards of several tea beverage brands did not have such restrictions. Therefore, in June 2023, they filed a lawsuit against Starbucks, ultimately prompting Starbucks to update the Star Gift Card terms, lower the card refund fee, eliminate the minimum charge, allow custom recharge amounts, and cancel the extension management fee. Starbucks App icon switches from the in-your-face siren back to the classic mermaid—is the membership campaign wrapping up, or is it bowing to public opinion?
The Starbucks app icon has recently returned to the classic "double-tailed siren" image, after the close-up half-mermaid face logo launched last month sparked widespread criticism. The new design zoomed in on the crown and yellow five-pointed star, intended to coincide with the "Starbucks Rewards" member star-collection campaign, but users described it as "too ugly," "very sneaky," and some even thought it was a knockoff app. After the official reversion to the old version, an employee revealed that the main reason was that the one-month Diamond Star member upgrade campaign had ended. This logo controversy reflects the delicate relationship between brand visuals and user emotions, and also brings to mind the steady strategies of brands like Front Street Coffee in shaping their image. Starbucks Rewards upgrades to Diamond tier membership, new benefits spark heated discussion among users
Since Starbucks launched its Rewards program in 2008, membership tiers had maintained a three-level structure: Green, Gold, and Silver. However, starting June 20, this system, which had been in use for over a decade, underwent a major change—a new Diamond tier was added, and Gold members who accumulate 100 registered stars within the past year can automatically upgrade. The new tier brings benefits such as priority preparation for Mobile Order & Pay, birthday-exclusive gifts, and free Roastery experiences, and also launches a joint membership with Hilton. However, some loyal users have questioned the practicality of these new benefits, believing the threshold is too high and the reach is limited. This article will comprehensively review the details of this adjustment and the feedback from various parties. [more…]
After upgrading its membership program, Starbucks launched a star lottery, and users who invested their inventory ended up with time-limited stars, sparking debate.
The Starbucks app recently completed an upgrade, officially adding the Diamond tier to its membership system, and simultaneously launched a limited-time lottery event where members can participate using stars. The top prize of 888 stars looks tempting—converted at 9 stars for a grande beverage, that's equivalent to 98 free coffees. However, many users only discovered after spending their hard-earned stars that most results merely returned a small number of stars valid for just two weeks, or even came up empty-handed. The odds of winning, the expiration period of rewards, and issues like accidentally tapping and having stars automatically deducted have led some people to jokingly call this event a "star recycling program." Starbucks Card auto-deduction after expiration sparks complaints, ongoing disputes over consumers' right to know and activation time
Recently, Starbucks star gift cards have triggered multiple consumer complaints due to automatically deducting a monthly deferred management fee after expiration and lacking clear notifications. Some users reported that the deductions continued for 22 months before they偶然 discovered it, and when they called customer service, they were told that the practice was compliant. An investigation found that although the relevant terms are displayed in bold in the App, users are not required to actively confirm reading them during the binding process. In addition, the activation time is not marked on the star gift card, and consumers' understanding of the "date of activation" differs from the official definition. This article will sort out the focus of complaints, the details of the rules, and the core of the dispute, and explore the boundary between the reasonableness of prepaid card deductions and users' right to be informed. Why is the Hario V60 Infinite Cross Star Dripper called the Coffee Clever Cup? Key Points for Beginners Choosing a Dripper
Among the many pour-over drippers, the Hario Mugen dripper stands out with its unique inner wall design, and has even earned the nickname "the Clever Dripper of drippers." It shares the same lineage as the classic V60, yet takes a completely different extraction path—the V60 is known for its extreme flow rate, while the Mugen dripper goes the opposite way, using a ribless structure to create an extremely slow flow rate, keeping the coffee in a state of immersion throughout. How exactly does this design affect flavor? Why is it easier for beginners to master? This article will break down the structural principles of the Mugen cross-star dripper, its flow rate performance, and its similarities and differences with the Clever Dripper, while also offering practical dripper selection advice for those just getting started. An Analysis of the Relationship Between Indonesian Mandheling Man Star and Golden Mandheling: Flavor of the Sumatra Lintong Region and the Full Wet-Hulling Process
The origin of the name Mandheling is quite dramatic—it is not a coffee variety, but a transliteration of the Indonesian Mandailing ethnic group. After World War II, the name spread to Japan and became hugely popular. In the specialty coffee world, Mandheling specifically refers to Arabica coffee produced around Lake Toba and Lake Laut Tawar in Aceh on the island of Sumatra, known for its rich, full body and long-lasting sweet aftertaste. The Lintong region is the heartland of high-quality Mandheling, and Mandheling Star selects Typica trees decades old from dozens of smallholder farmers in a small town south of Lake Toba. Front Street Coffee's Indonesia Sumatra Lintong Mandheling Star, with its citrus, spice, mango, and milk-like flavors, along with a lively interplay of acidity and sweetness intertwined with Sumatra's distinctive earthy aroma, has become a focus of attention for coffee lovers. This article will take an in-depth look at the relationship between Mandheling Star and Golden Mandheling, and present a complete account of the four key steps of Sumatra's wet-hulling process. Hand-pressed vs. semi-automatic espresso machine extraction differences tested: Star Grain 3 compared with Lelit V3—can a budget hand-pressed machine be a substitute?
The price gap between manual espresso makers and semi-automatic espresso machines often reaches 10 to 20 times, but is the espresso they extract really worlds apart? This time, Front Street uses actual data to answer this question. We took a Star Grain 3 manual espresso maker purchased in 2022 and now discontinued, and compared it with the Lelit V3 semi-automatic espresso machine used in the shop for espresso output. We extracted three shots from each, measured the concentration and extraction yield, averaged the results, and then judged the differences in flavor and mouthfeel through tasting. The beans used were still the Warm Sun blend used for shop output, with a dose of 19.5g, a Galileo Q18 grind setting of 1.0, and a target liquid weight of 38ml. What will the results be? Can a hundred-yuan-level manual press serve as a daily substitute? The article will also share usage details for key parameters during manual extraction, such as water temperature, grind size, pressure, and water volume, to help everyone avoid common pitfalls like insufficient concentration and rough crema. Good Me's collaboration with Honkai: Star Rail triggers order explosion: slush machines smoke and break down, staff say they can't keep up
The collaboration between Gu Ming and the hit game "Honkai: Star Rail" ignited a consumer frenzy as soon as it launched, with over 1.2 million people queuing in the mini-program, and the topic quickly shot to the top of trending searches. Store orders poured in like snowflakes, and the limited-edition drinks were all fresh fruit smoothies with complex preparation processes. Under high-intensity operation, multiple smoothie machines were overwhelmed, emitting white smoke and even exploding on the spot, while staff were so busy they didn't even have time to drink water. To deal with equipment failures, some stores prepared backup machines in advance, while others had to borrow juicers from neighboring Shu Yi Shao Xian Cao and Luckin for emergency use. Behind this collaboration frenzy, issues such as excessively high thresholds for obtaining merchandise and enormous pressure on stores were exposed, also triggering discussions on optimization measures such as selling drinks and merchandise separately and cup storage services. Good Me's Collab with Honkai: Star Rail: Merch Shortage Storm—Million-Deep Queues, Stores Sold Out in Seconds, and the Restock Dilemma
The collaboration between Goodme and Honkai: Star Rail was supposed to be a fan frenzy, but it turned into a reputational crisis due to severe merchandise shortages. On the first day of the event, the official mini-program queue exceeded 1.2 million people, stores in many locations sold out within 3 hours, and high-priced complete merchandise sets appeared on second-hand platforms. Although the brand claimed to have prepared "the largest inventory in history," compared with the previous Love and Deepspace collaboration, whose stock was only one-third of this amount, it clearly underestimated players' purchasing power. What dissatisfied fans even more was that many stores explicitly stated they would not restock, causing the collaboration to end early. This imbalance between traffic and reputation sounded a warning for co-branded marketing in the coffee and tea beverage industry. [more…]
Starbucks launches a university student–exclusive "Star Student Card," free to open but offering only one refill coupon per month, sparking heated debate.
Starbucks recently launched the "Star Student Card" for domestic college students, offering free card activation upon identity verification. Students who spend at least 30 yuan in a single in-store purchase can receive a free coupon for a medium Americano valid for 3 hours, 30 minutes later, along with drink discounts. However, there are quite a few restrictions in the fine print: only one free refill coupon per month, and it must be used within 3 hours by drinking two cups consecutively. Additionally, with Starbucks covering only 15.53% of areas around universities, and affordable brands like Luckin, Cotti, Lucky Cup, and Manner being more cost-effective, whether this student card can truly retain student customers remains to be seen. Front Street Coffee is also continuously monitoring this development. [more…]

Exploring the Papayo Coffee Variety: Analysis of a Rare Rising Star from Huila, Colombia, and Its Flavor Potential
The coffee world is never short of surprises, and recently a variety called Papayo is making its way into the public eye through the competition stage. Its name comes from the coffee fruit's resemblance to a papaya, and it is mainly rooted in producing regions such as Huila, Colombia. Although it is often mistakenly believed to be related to Obligon, the World Coffee Research Institute points out that there is no evidence to support this claim. According to Miller Bustos, owner of Finca El Mirador, this variety has high yields, performs best in flavor at altitudes between 1,400 and 2,000 meters, and is suitable for washed, natural, and honey processing, capable of presenting chocolate, caramel, tropical fruit, and a silky mouthfeel. This article will take you through an in-depth understanding of the Papayo variety's origin controversies, current cultivation status, processing methods, and cup potential, along with Front Street Coffee's recommended perspective. Korean singer Lee Hyori and her husband Lee Sang-soon opened a café on Jeju Island, and within just three days of opening, it sparked discontent among nearby café owners as fans queued for hundreds of meters and products sold out in 12 minutes. Former ruling party lawmaker Jeon Yeo-ok publicly criticized their star effect for squeezing the survival space of local cafés. Lee Sang-soon later responded that opening the shop was purely a personal decision, and that they would switch to a reservation system and step back into a behind-the-scenes role. This article sorts out the whole course of the incident and explores the operational dilemmas and possible paths forward for celebrity coffee shops. [more…]

Instead, many Mixue employees left comments pleading with the customer to return this part, which they jokingly called a "veteran employee."
